Individuation

Individuation is the ongoing, sometimes messy process of becoming your own person, separate from your family's expectations, roles, and inherited beliefs, while still holding onto love for them. For many people this process gets interrupted or complicated: by enmeshed family systems, cultural or religious expectations, or simply never having had the space to ask who they are apart from what was expected of them. It can bring up guilt, especially if your family has a hard time with you having your own opinions, choices, or a life that looks different from what they imagined.

We'll explore what it means for you to know yourself clearly, including which beliefs, values, and ways of living you've truly chosen, and which you've inherited without examination. This isn't about becoming more independent or self-sufficient for its own sake, and it doesn't mean choosing yourself over your family or community. For some people, individuation means more separation, and for others it means staying closely connected but with more clarity and intention about why. This is quiet, important work, and it often changes everything else in your life once it starts to shift.
